A routine Thursday at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon, shattered when a 16-year-old former student launched a violent attack, killing three children and a teacher. Local authorities and witnesses later detailed a harrowing sequence of events where quick-thinking staff and a passing motorist intervened to prevent further casualties before the suspect was fatally shot.
Inside the Classroom: Direct Intervention at Silver Rail Elementary
According to updates from the Bend Police Department, the teenage gunman shot his way into the school building on Thursday. Armed with a shotgun and carrying roughly 44 additional rounds of ammunition, the suspect entered a classroom and discharged as many as 15 rounds.
Amid the chaos, an unnamed female teacher demonstrated immense courage. Police reported that she threw her mobile phone and tackled the 16-year-old on the classroom floor, attempting to wrestle the weapon directly from his grasp. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz noted that while the teacher was uninjured in the struggle, her intervention almost certainly prevented further bloodshed.
Investigators identified the suspect as Griffin J John II, who previously attended the school as a special educational needs student. While law enforcement executed a search warrant at his home and continues to examine how he obtained the firearm and traveled to the campus on foot, officials confirmed that his specific motive remains under investigation.
A Bystander’s Decision and Community Aftermath
The tragedy was halted when a passing motorist intervened outside the classroom setting. Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old carpenter who had just finished lunch and was driving past the school with his two daughters inside the building, witnessed the suspect fire at a vehicle and shoot through a window to gain entry.
Grabbing a legally concealed .40-caliber pistol from his vehicle, Giamanco rushed inside the building and confronted the attacker, firing multiple times to stop him. Chief Krantz praised the combined bravery of the teacher and the armed father, stating that their actions ultimately saved lives.
During a news conference on Friday, police formally identified two of the four victims: five-year-old Rhoam Summer and 25-year-old teacher Meghan Lambert. Lambert’s family released a statement honoring her lifelong dedication to teaching and her compassion for special needs students, while Summer’s family mourned the loss of a bright, fun-loving child. The families of the two other children killed—an eight-year-old and an 11-year-old—chose not to make their names public at this time.
Official Responses and Ongoing Recovery
The incident drew widespread attention from state and national leaders. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek acknowledged the immense emotional burden carried by those who intervened to stop the violence. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump addressed reporters on Friday, offering praise for the bystander’s actions.
As the community of Bend holds candlelit vigils and processes the profound grief of the attack, two others remain hospitalized with injuries, including a 54-year-old teacher receiving treatment and a seven-year-old student listed in serious but stable condition. Local authorities continue their comprehensive investigation into the events leading up to the shooting.
