Ohio Governor’s Race Escalates as Ramaswamy Campaign Airs Controversial Attack Ad

A Heated Turn in the Ohio Gubernatorial Campaign

The political landscape in Ohio has experienced a sharp escalation following the release of a controversial attack ad by Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. The digital spot focuses directly on his opponent, Amy Acton, by featuring her estranged mother, Donna Arthur, who makes severe accusations regarding her daughter’s past. The development marks a deeply personal shift in the race for the governor’s seat, drawing immediate and intense condemnation from Acton’s campaign and her family.

Circulating initially on social media without immediate mandatory disclosures regarding who authorized and funded the spot, the ad quickly became a central point of discussion. By Tuesday, Ramaswamy acknowledged to reporters that the spot originated from his campaign. Defending the decision to air the content, his campaign asserted that voters deserve to hear from individuals who claim to know the candidate personally before deciding who to trust with the state’s leadership.

Family Outrage and Historical Context

The response from Acton’s camp was swift and severe. Philip Stearns, Acton’s brother, issued a sharp rebuke against Ramaswamy, criticizing the use of their family’s traumatic history as a political instrument. According to historical court records provided by Acton’s campaign, the family experienced significant hardship, including a period of childhood poverty and homelessness where they lived in a tent for a year.

Records also show that in 1978, when Acton was between 10 and 12 years old, her stepfather, Cledith Arthur, was charged with raping her, entering a not guilty plea. Stearns stated that after the arrest, he and Acton were removed from the custody of the Arthurs and went to live with their biological father, noting that their mother remained married to the accused stepfather until his death in 2004. Acton previously recounted to the Youngstown Vindicator in 2019 that a brief encounter at the courthouse after the charges were filed was the final time she ever saw her mother.

Broader Campaign Dynamics and Scrutiny

As the race progresses, Acton has maintained a strong position in recent polling over the past month, which has coincided with various personal attacks from rival backers. Beyond the recent advertisement, other elements of her personal and professional background have resurfaced during the current election cycle. This includes public attention on her tenure as the state’s public health commissioner under Republican Governor Mike DeWine during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as a 2019 domestic dispute incident where police were called to her home.

Ramaswamy’s campaign spokesperson, Connie Luck, defended the focus on Acton’s credibility in a statement, questioning her reliability based on the statements made by her mother, who first spoke publicly about Acton in 2020. As both camps trade sharp arguments, the gubernatorial contest continues to draw intense public focus over the boundaries of personal history and political strategy in Ohio.
