Paris Suburban Shooting Investigated as Terrorist Crime After Deadly Rampage

French counter-terrorism officials and interior ministry leadership have formally classified a violent, multi-location gun rampage in the Parisian suburbs as an act of terrorism. The sequence of events unfolded on Friday morning, leaving one person dead and five others injured—three critically—during a rapid succession of drive-by attacks spanning two towns southwest of the capital.

The 15-minute assault began in Trappes before extending into nearby La Verrière, according to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez. Witnesses reported that a gunman inside a grey Renault Clio traveled through multiple neighborhoods, firing intermittently out of the vehicle window along a main road. Local authorities noted that targets in Trappes included a petrol station, a medical centre, and a playground, resulting in widespread chaos before the suspect moved toward neighboring areas.

Among the five wounded victims is a 12-year-old girl. Her mother told a French broadcaster that the child sustained eight gunshot wounds and required surgery. The suspect, identified as a 39-year-old individual, was eventually detained by law enforcement on the main N10 road in La Verrière, with local media indicating his arrest took place in the nearby town of Coignières.

The National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) stepped in to lead the inquiry, stating that the incident appeared to constitute a murder linked to a terrorist enterprise. Interior Minister Nuñez confirmed to reporters at the scene that officials view the violence as a clear terrorist crime. Investigators are also examining potential aggravating circumstances involving racial, ethnic, national, or religious motivations, alongside allegations of conspiracy with a terrorist group.

According to preliminary intelligence shared by authorities and local media, the suspect was known to general police forces but had not been flagged by French intelligence agencies. He was not listed among individuals categorized as high threats to national security. Law enforcement sources noted that the weapon used during the attack was an older semi-automatic firearm, with reports indicating it may have originated from the World War Two era, capable of firing in bursts.

The investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors and police piece together the precise timeline and underlying factors of the rampage. While the inquiry covers multiple legal fronts—including possession of a military-grade or burst-capable Category A weapon—officials continue to analyze witness statements and physical evidence gathered from the various impact sites across Trappes and La Verrière.
