First Media Remarks Following Federal Scrutiny
Representative Ilhan Omar recently broke her silence regarding federal investigations centered on her immigration background and former marriage. Speaking publicly for the first time since federal agents executed a search warrant at her Washington, D.C., residence on October 12, the Minnesota Democrat addressed long-standing allegations and answered questions about her past.
The recent search was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents under a court-authorized warrant issued by U.S. Magistrate Judge Matthew J. Sharbaugh of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Federal authorities are examining potential false statements within the congresswoman’s immigration and naturalization documents, though the Department of Justice has not publicly detailed the specific allegations.
Addressing Marriage and Sibling Rumors
During the interview, Omar denied accusations that she married her former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, to facilitate immigration fraud. She also pushed back against persistent claims that she and Elmi share a familial relationship, attributing the origin of the narrative to online speculation.
When explicitly asked if any family relation existed between herself and her ex-husband, Omar stated, “Not to my knowledge.” She further noted that the rumors originated from a Somali blog years prior, stating that an online post initially claimed Elmi was her brother.
Throughout the ongoing inquiry, the congresswoman has maintained her innocence, characterizing the federal actions as politically motivated. Following the October 12 raid, Omar released a social media video from the back of a car urging supporters for financial backing. Reports indicate that federal authorities have issued more than a dozen grand jury subpoenas to individuals including family members, and seized her cellphone.
Expanding Financial Inquiries
In addition to the immigration document inquiry, federal authorities are pursuing a separate investigation concerning Omar’s campaign finances and financial disclosures. This financial inquiry reportedly began during the Biden administration in 2024.
Although congressional ethics hawks previously dismissed a complaint regarding wealth discrepancies found in her disclosures, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro announced that external authorities are now examining the matter. Both the immigration-related investigation and the campaign finance inquiry remain active and ongoing.
