Nine Killed as Learjet 60 Crashes on Palm Beach County Roadway

BODY:

A tragic aviation incident unfolded in a residential area of Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday when a business jet crashed onto a busy multi-lane roadway. Federal transportation authorities confirmed that all nine individuals on board the aircraft lost their lives in the disaster, although no injuries or fatalities were reported among people on the ground.

Final Moments Captured in Cockpit Audio

The aircraft involved was a Learjet 60 that had departed from Austin, Texas, bound for the Bahamas, according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Flight analysis indicates that the aircraft was plunging at a rate of hundreds of feet per second before the crash.

Air traffic control recordings from moments before the impact reveal the crew’s struggle in the cockpit. A crew member reported encountering “moderate turbulence” and noted that the flight team was “managing the ice.” The audio captured the pilot stating that the plane was “picking up precipitation” and that they “need to climb.” Shortly afterward, the same voice reported that the aircraft was descending at a rate of 10,000 feet (3,048 meters) per minute.

An emergency was declared when the crew member shouted that the plane was in an “overspeed condition descending 20,000ft per minute” and warned that they were going to crash into the ground. Approximately 35 seconds after the initial mayday call, the final transmission from the cockpit stated, “we’re out of time.”

Impact Site and Evacuations Along Military Trail

The crash occurred around 12:50 EST (17:50 GMT) near Cresthaven on Military Trail, a six-lane road featuring businesses and restaurants in Palm Beach County. The site is situated roughly nine miles (14 km) from Mar-a-Lago, the resort belonging to President Donald Trump, who had departed from a nearby airport on Air Force One about an hour prior to the event.

Unverified social media and dash-camera footage showed vehicles driving on a residential suburban street before the aircraft nosedived almost vertically into the ground, triggering a massive fireball and leaving a large crater in the middle of the road. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis told reporters at a news conference that the visual was jarring, comparing the descent to an incoming missile that sent debris scattering across the area.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue declared the event a mass casualty incident. Local authorities, including the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, evacuated approximately 600 residents from a nearby trailer-park community due to the danger. Officials reported that the impact caused significant damage to local infrastructure, including water lines, and estimated that the affected roadway would remain closed for at least 30 days.

Official Responses and Investigation

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy described the incident as a horrific tragedy, announcing that the FAA is deploying a team to assist the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) with its investigation. Thunderstorms had been reported in the area at the time of the accident, and heavy rain persisted during the subsequent government news conference.

While the identities of those on board have not yet been publicly disclosed, Governor DeSantis confirmed that there were no reports of any individuals on the ground being killed or injured. Investigators will continue examining flight data, environmental factors, and cockpit audio to piece together the exact cause of the tragedy.
